Esoteria — Speckled Abstract Round Wool Rug in Cream, Slate & Rust

Esoteria is covered edge to edge in fine speckle, the way granite is, or lichen spreading over stone. Cream, slate grey and charcoal dominate the top of the circle; toward the base, rust brown and mustard gold gather more densely, so the whole rug warms from the top down without any visible line where one changes into the other.

Nothing here is a shape. Every mark is a small irregular fleck laid beside dozens of others, and the pattern emerges only from how densely each colour is scattered. A hand-tufted round rug that reads as texture from across the room and rewards a closer look.

Colour Story

  • Cream — the lightest flecks, spread across the whole surface
  • Slate Grey — cool mid-tones concentrated in the upper half
  • Charcoal — the darkest marks, scattered as small dense clusters
  • Rust Brown — warm flecks gathering toward the base
  • Mustard Gold — bright accents that lift the lower half
  • Mauve — soft muted touches between the warm and cool zones

Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India

Every Esoteria rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing using a hand-held tufting gun, to a dense 4000 GSM.

Speckle is slow to make. There is no large area to fill, only thousands of small patches each placed individually, and the gradient from cool to warm has to happen gradually across the entire surface. At 4000 GSM the pile is dense enough that each fleck stays crisp rather than blurring into its neighbours — on a lighter construction this kind of detail tends to smudge.

New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and holds dye brilliantly, which is what keeps six closely scattered colours distinct from one another.

Available Sizes

Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.

  • 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
  • 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
  • 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
  • 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out

The speckle covers the whole circle with no focal point, so nothing important is lost under furniture at any size.

Styling Notes

Esoteria is one of the most practical rugs in the collection. Because the pattern is made entirely of small scattered marks, it hides everyday wear, crumbs and small spills far better than a plain rug or a bold graphic one — an easy choice for entrances, dining rooms and family spaces. It pairs with concrete, stone, oak and walnut, with grey, charcoal or rust upholstery, and with black metal or aged brass. Suits contemporary, organic modern and industrial interiors.

Care Instructions

  • Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
  • Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub
  • Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
  • Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
  • Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
  • Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
  • Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the rust and gold
  • Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
