Hand Tufted Abstract Landscape Round Wool Rug | Charcoal, Sand & Grey | Elusis by Rugfine
Elusis — Abstract Landscape Round Wool Rug in Charcoal, Sand & Grey
Elusis reads like land seen from the air. Broad horizontal bands of charcoal, sand and pale grey drift across the circle, and where one meets the next the boundary does not hold — it breaks apart into speckle, the way a shoreline or a treeline does from height.
It is a hand-tufted round rug with a great deal happening in it and not a single strong colour, which makes it one of the easiest pieces in the collection to place.
Colour Story
- Charcoal — deep grey-brown bands that anchor the composition
- Sand & Beige — warm gold-tinged fields running through the middle
- Pale Grey — cool, soft zones that lift the lower half
- Cream — the lightest scatter, where the speckle thins out
Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India
Every Elusis rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing using a hand-held tufting gun.
The dissolving edges are the hardest part of this design. A clean line between two colours is straightforward work; a gradual scatter is not, because every tuft has to be placed individually to build the density from solid to sparse. Get the rhythm wrong and it looks like a mistake rather than erosion. It is one of the few effects in hand tufting that cannot be faked with a carved edge — it has to be built tuft by tuft.
New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and takes dye evenly, which matters enormously in a design built from this many close neutral tones.

Available Sizes
Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.
- 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
- 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
- 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
- 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out
The banding runs horizontally, so the aerial effect is strongest at 8 ft and above where the full sweep of the landscape is visible.
Styling Notes
Elusis works almost anywhere, which is its real strength. The neutral palette sits with oak, walnut, concrete and stone equally well, and with upholstery in cream, oatmeal, grey, olive or tan leather. Because it introduces no colour, you can build the rest of the room freely around it — or use it as the calm floor beneath a room that already has plenty going on. Ideal for contemporary, minimalist and organic modern interiors, and a safe choice for a study, bedroom or open-plan living space.
Care Instructions
- Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
- Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
- Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub; act fast on the sand and cream areas
- Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
- Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
- Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
- Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
- Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading
- Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
