White Agate Side Table, Round Top

About the Agate

White agate built up inside a rock cavity as silica arrived in stages, and each stage left a layer. The layers here are white, cream and a clouded gray, separated by hairline seams finer than a pencil mark.

Cutting a slab through those layers is what exposes them. A round top takes a section across the whole sequence, so the banding reads as concentric arcs running off one side of the circle rather than centered in it.

How It’s Made

Here the edge is worked round instead of left as the stone broke, so the top is a true circle and the profile is even the whole way around. Electroformed metal follows that rim: metal grown onto the agate in a bath until it has thickness of its own and is permanently bonded to the stone, never a leaf or coating laid over it. The legs are electroformed in the same finish. Silver keeps the rim almost invisible against white, gold outlines it, rose gold does the same more quietly.

Slight variation in natural stone will occur; a round cut lands differently on every slab, so the banding is never placed the same way twice.

Assembly

The legs are removable and the table is easily assembled on delivery. The top ships flat and the legs come packed apart from it, fixing to the underside of the slab and unfixing again for storage.

A Gift For

A round top has no corners to catch, which is part of why this reads as a housewarming or wedding-registry gift for a first apartment. It also does well as a corporate or client present.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Soak up any spill at once with a paper towel and wipe dry to avoid staining, and avoid chemical cleaners on the stone.
