The Sign

A stepped deco outline with a fan of rays opening above the field and a small arrow head set into each shoulder. The number runs across the middle in tall figures and the street name sits on a band at the foot.

Nineteen-thirties in its bones. The stepping at the edges is the same idea as a theater marquee.

Craftsmanship

Real copper and brass grown over the sculpted form rather than poured into a mold. Deco is unforgiving of soft edges, and casting rounds every corner slightly; grown over a form, each ray of the fan keeps a hard edge and the steps stay square. Rays, arrows and lettering are cut at their own heights, 2 to 5 mm off the ground. The plaque is 8 to 10 mm thick and solid all the way through.

Readable from the road

The rays do more than decorate. They pull the eye upward to the number, and because the brass is raised over a ground left dark, the figures read as contrast at a distance rather than as shape. It holds in flat light and under a porch lamp.

Built for outside

UV-protected and weather-treated after finishing. Sun will not fade it, rain will not mark it, and there is nothing in the body to rust and streak down a rendered facade.

Personalization

Two lines: the number and the street. Send them exactly as you want them set. The geometry suits short, wide street names particularly well, but long ones are fine and the lettering is sized to fit the name rather than the reverse. A design preview comes back by email before anything is made.

The individual rays of the fan stay separate at every size in the range. This is one of the more forgiving designs at 6 x 4.

Mounting

Three ways, chosen at checkout.

• Keyhole slots: two screws, and the flat base line makes it simple to level.
• Peel-and-stick tape: sealed strips already applied to the back. No drilling into tile or render.
• Floating stud mount: reinforced studs that hold it off the wall so the stepped edge throws its own shadow, which is exactly the effect the style wants.

Hardware and instructions are included with all three.

Where it works

A city apartment entrance, a lobby, a painted door surround, a rendered wall. It belongs on a deco or mid-century building and looks deliberate on a modern one.
