About the Mookaite

Mookaite is an Australian jasper and it carries several colors at once: mustard and cream through to brick red, burgundy and occasionally purple, laid down in patches and bands across the same piece.

It is opaque, so the interest is in the pattern rather than in light passing through. Polished, the surface is smooth and even, and the color boundaries stay sharp where one band meets the next.

How It’s Made

Each knob is cut and polished to a flat face, which shows the banding at full width, and then fitted to a brass bolt. Around the perimeter the metal is electroformed: grown onto the stone until it has real thickness and is bonded for good, rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off.

Every knob is worked from its own piece of stone, so the banding lands differently on each and the width varies within that range.

Fit and Installation

It mounts on cupboards, drawers and wardrobe fronts through a single hole. The 1.75" bolt comes with it and can be trimmed to size, so nothing further is needed. Tighten the bolt by hand rather than forcing it once the knob is firm.

Care

Dust with a soft dry cloth. Household cleaners flatten the color of jasper and will haze the polish over time.
