Hand Tufted Marbled Abstract Round Wool Rug | Plum, Ivory & Gold | Serase by Rugfine
Serase — Marbled Abstract Round Wool Rug in Plum, Ivory & Gold
Serase looks like a slab of polished stone cut in cross-section. The upper half is deep plum brown, clouded and veined with lighter taupe like the grain in marble. Across the middle it breaks, and the lower half opens into ivory flecked through with ochre and olive gold, as if light were catching mineral deposits beneath the surface.
There are no drawn shapes anywhere in this design — every mark is a mottle, a vein or a fleck. A hand-tufted round rug that brings the depth of natural stone to the floor, in something soft underfoot.
Colour Story
- Plum Brown — the deep, veined upper half of the circle
- Ivory — the pale field opening across the lower half
- Ochre & Olive Gold — warm mineral flecks scattered through the ivory
- Lavender Grey — cool touches exactly where the dark and light halves meet
- Taupe — the lighter veining running through the plum
Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India
Every Serase rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing using a hand-held tufting gun.
A mottled surface like this is built from many closely related tones placed side by side in small irregular patches. Too few tones and it looks like camouflage; too regular and it looks printed. Getting it to read as stone is a matter of judgement at every tuft — there is no template, only the eye of the artisan.
New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and takes dye evenly, which is essential in a design built from so many subtle shifts of tone.

Available Sizes
Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.
- 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
- 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
- 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
- 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out
The design divides into a dark upper half and a pale lower half, so orient it with the ivory side facing into the room for a lighter feel, or the plum side forward for a moodier one.
Styling Notes
Serase reads as a luxury material rather than a pattern, which makes it work in rooms where a graphic rug would feel wrong. It pairs beautifully with marble, travertine and brushed brass, with velvet or bouclé in plum, cream or mushroom, and with walnut or smoked oak. The gold flecks catch lamplight in the evening. Ideal for luxe contemporary and organic modern bedrooms, living rooms and dressing rooms.
Care Instructions
- Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
- Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
- Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub; act fast on the ivory half
- Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
- Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
- Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
- Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
- Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the plum and gold
- Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
