Styph — Snakeskin Round Wool Rug in Black, Ivory & Grey

Styph is python skin rendered in wool. Scales of ivory, pale grey and charcoal sit on a deep black ground, and like a real snake they are not uniform — small and tightly packed across the upper part of the circle, broadening into large, open scales toward the lower edge, with diagonal bands running through them.

That change in scale is what makes it read as skin rather than as a repeating pattern. A hand-tufted round rug that brings the drama of animal print without a single colour to design around.

Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India

Every Styph rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing, to a dense 4000 GSM, then hand-carve every scale.

Each scale is built from two or three tones rather than one flat colour, which is what gives the surface the soft shimmer of a real hide rather than the look of a print. And because the scales change size gradually across the circle, no two rows are cut the same way — there is no repeat to follow, only the natural logic of how skin stretches.

New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and holds dye brilliantly, which keeps the ivory bright and the black deep for years.

Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.

• 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table

• 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
• 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out

The all-over pattern has no focal point, so Styph works at every size with nothing important hidden under furniture.

Styling Notes

Monochrome animal print is one of the most versatile patterns there is. It is bold enough to be a statement, but because it carries no colour it sits comfortably alongside almost anything — cognac leather, black or emerald velvet, marble, brass or plain white walls. It is a natural fit for a glam bedroom, a dressing room or a sleek living space, and adds instant edge to a neutral scheme. Suits contemporary, glam and monochrome interiors.

Care Instructions

• Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
• Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
• Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub; act fast on the ivory scales
• Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
• Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
• Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
• Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
• Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
• Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading
• Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
