Thorex — Nocturne Abstract Round Wool Rug in Navy, Burgundy & Amber

Thorex is built in layers, like a cross-section through rock. A deep navy-black core sits at the centre, ringed by oxblood burgundy and then a rim of blush pink, and banked inside it are bands of amber gold, teal and slate blue — as if light were reaching a long way down and only just getting there.

It is the darkest round rug in the collection and also the richest, a hand-tufted piece that rewards looking at closely.

Colour Story

  • Navy Black — the deep core the whole composition sinks into
  • Oxblood Burgundy — a wide arc wrapping the left side
  • Blush Pink — the outer rim, unexpectedly soft against so much dark
  • Amber Gold — the single warm focal point, set high and off-centre
  • Teal — a cool band running beneath the amber
  • Slate Blue & Grey — the churned lower third of the circle

Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India

Every Thorex rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing using a hand-held tufting gun.

Every boundary between layers here is torn and feathered rather than cut, so one colour seems to seep into the next. In wool that means the transition has to be built tuft by tuft in short interlocking fingers — it cannot be carved in afterwards. It is the slowest way to make an edge, and the only one that looks geological rather than drawn.

New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and holds dye brilliantly, which matters most in a dark palette, where cheap dye goes muddy and the layers stop reading as separate.

Available Sizes

Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.

  • 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
  • 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
  • 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
  • 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out

The amber focal point sits in the upper left of the composition, so orient the rug with that quarter facing into the room rather than under a sofa.

Styling Notes

The single amber shape is doing the most work here. In a palette this dark, one warm colour placed high and off-centre becomes the point the eye returns to, and everything else arranges itself around it. Build the room the same way: keep upholstery solid in charcoal, grey, oatmeal or oxblood velvet, add walnut or rosewood, brass and smoked glass, and let one ochre or mustard cushion answer the amber. Ideal for panelled studies, dark-walled living rooms, dark academia and modern-art interiors — and a good choice for a room with little natural light, where pale rugs tend to look grey.

Care Instructions

  • Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
  • Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub; act fast on the blush and amber areas
  • Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
  • Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
  • Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
  • Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
  • Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the burgundy and amber
  • Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
