Novanex — Irregular Shape Wool Rug in Mustard Yellow

Novanex breaks away from the usual rug outline. Two rounded rectangles — one wide, one tall — cross over each other to form a soft plus shape, and the rug is cut exactly to that silhouette. Every edge is curved; there is not a single sharp corner.

The colour is all mustard yellow, laid in bands that step darker toward the middle. Where the two rectangles overlap the tone deepens to ochre, as though two sheets of tinted glass had been laid one on top of the other. A hand-tufted shaped rug with a surprising amount of depth for a single colour.

Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India

Every Novanex rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing, to a dense 4000 GSM.

A shaped rug is more demanding to finish than a rectangle or a circle. The outline is cut and bound by hand around every curve and inside corner, and the tonal bands have to follow that outline at an even distance all the way round so the layered, see-through effect reads cleanly.

New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-retardant and takes dye evenly, which is essential when the whole design depends on closely stepped shades of one colour.

Available Sizes

Seven sizes, measured across the widest point: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet. The rug fits within a square of the chosen size.

• 3–4 ft — bedsides, entryways, reading corners and nurseries
• 5–6 ft — under a coffee table or armchair, or as the centrepiece of a bedroom
• 8 ft — living rooms, with the front legs of the sofa on the rug
• 10–12 ft — large open-plan rooms, where the unusual outline becomes a feature of the floor plan

Because the shape is symmetrical on both axes, Novanex looks the same from every side of the room.

Styling Notes

Novanex is a cheerful, sculptural rug. The shaped outline makes it read almost as a piece of furniture on the floor, so it works best with space around it rather than tucked under a sofa. Pair it with white, grey or charcoal upholstery, pale oak, and chrome or black metal; it is equally at home in a playful kids' room or a crisp minimalist living room that needs a burst of warm colour. Suits contemporary, minimalist and playful modern interiors.

Care Instructions

• Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
• Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
• Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub
• Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
• Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
• Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
• Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
• Use an anti-slip rug pad cut to the outline to stop movement and protect the curved edges
• Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the yellow
• Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
