Hand Tufted Coffered Dome Round Wool Rug | Black, Teal & Cream | Vitran by Rugfine
Vitran — Coffered Dome Round Wool Rug in Black, Teal & Cream
Vitran takes the ceiling of a Roman dome and lays it on the floor. Rings of coffered squares radiate outward from a teal oculus at the centre, each one framed in taupe and teal on a deep black ground, growing larger as they move toward the edge — exactly as they do when you stand beneath a dome and look up.
It is one of the few designs in the collection that genuinely could not exist as a rectangle. A coffered dome is radial by nature, and only a round rug can hold it.
Colour Story
- Black — the recessed ground between the coffers, giving the depth
- Teal — the oculus at the centre, the outer border, and the inner frame of every square
- Taupe Grey — the outer frame line, the shadow of each recess
- Cream — the face of every coffer, and a fine ring inside the border
Hand Tufted in Bhadohi, India
Every Vitran rug is handcrafted in our own workshop in Bhadohi, in the heart of India's carpet belt. Artisans hand-tuft 100% New Zealand wool into a cotton canvas backing using a hand-held tufting gun, then carve every frame by hand.
The growth of the squares is the whole trick of this design. None of them is truly square: each is drawn in perspective, slightly tapered, tilted toward the centre, and sized according to which ring it sits in. Get that progression wrong and the dome flattens into a grid of boxes. On top of that, each coffer carries three concentric frames — taupe, teal and cream — that all have to stay even as the shape itself tapers.
New Zealand wool is used for a reason — it is naturally springy, stain-resistant, flame-resistant and holds dye brilliantly, which is what keeps fine taupe and teal outlines crisp against black.

Available Sizes
Seven round diameters: 3 Feet, 4 Feet, 5 Feet, 6 Feet, 8 Feet, 10 Feet and 12 Feet.
- 3–4 ft — entryways, bedsides, reading nooks, under a small side table
- 5–6 ft — coffee table anchor, nursery, home office chair zone
- 8 ft — the most popular living room size; front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
- 10–12 ft — large open-plan living rooms and round dining tables, with chairs staying on the rug when pulled out
The oculus is the centre of the whole design, so keep it visible. In an entrance hall or beneath a chandelier this rug is at its best, with the dome open to the room.
Styling Notes
Vitran is formal without being fussy. It suits entrance halls, panelled rooms and dining spaces, and sits beautifully under a round table or a pendant light, where the radial symmetry answers the fitting above it. Pair it with black metal, marble, walnut and cane; upholstery in cream, teal or charcoal. The black ground makes it exceptional on pale stone and light oak floors, and it works equally in a neoclassical scheme or a stripped-back contemporary one.
Care Instructions
- Dry clean only — do not machine wash, soak or steam clean
- Vacuum regularly without a beater bar; use suction only on cut pile
- Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — never rub; act fast on the cream coffers
- Easy to clean: the dense wool pile releases dust and dirt with routine vacuuming
- Shedding is normal on a new wool rug for the first few weeks and settles with vacuuming
- Trim any sprouting tufts with scissors — never pull them
- Rotate every 6 months for even wear and consistent light exposure
- Use an anti-slip rug pad underneath to stop movement and extend the life of the pile
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent fading on the teal
- Air the rug outdoors in shade occasionally to refresh the wool
