Black Agate Slice Cabinet Knobs

About the Agate

Black agate is the most opaque of the agates. The ground is a dense near-black, and the banding shows as gray and white lines running parallel to the outline of the piece, sometimes tight and even, sometimes widening into a broad pale stripe on one side.

Polished, the black surface behaves almost like glass and reflects the room, so the knob reads darker or lighter depending on what is in front of it. Held to a window the thinnest edges pass a faint brown light, which is the only clue that the black does not run all the way through.

How It’s Made

Each knob is a slice of black agate, polished flat on the face and left with its own outline, so widths differ from one to the next. The cut edge is electroformed, real metal grown onto the stone and permanently bonded rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off, in thick metallic gold. The metal rim holds the slice and carries the fitting for the bolt.

Every slice is cut from a different nodule and none is trimmed to match another, which is where the range in width comes from.

Fit and Installation

Mounts on cabinet doors, drawers and wardrobe fronts through one hole, with no additional hardware required. The bolt can be shortened for a thin door. Tighten with care so the bolt holds the slice without loading it, and stop as soon as it sits firm.

Care

Wipe the stone with a soft dry cloth, which is all a polished face needs, and keep household cleaners off the electroformed rim.
