Silica-rich water seeped into a gas pocket in cooling lava and set coat after coat, each carrying a slightly different mineral load, so the stone is a stack of stripes that follow the shape of the cavity rather than any straight line.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCut flat, those stripes read as rings of cream, amber, gray and rust, tight in places and broad in others.
